How to back up your blog - Introduction

If you have read my previous on why you should back up your blog, then perhaps now you are wondering how do you back up your blog. This post does not have the technical details yet but this will serve as an introduction.

There are two types of back up you can do for your blog.

  1. Back up the contents of your blog
This pertains to your blog posts, categories, labels and pages. This could be anything that you have written for your blog. For most people, this is the more important of the two types since this is the life of your blog. Usually you can find the contents of your blog stored in a database.
  2. Back up the template/plug-ins/files
This pertains to your templates, plug-in or simply the folder where your blog is stored. If these files gets lost, your blog will be physically unavailable. You know of the 404 not found error right? That is what you will get if these files gets lost.

Silkenhut reaching out Issue 3

I am now in my third week in this reaching out series. That means that one week from now, my blog is going to be 1 month old! My blog’s monthsary!

A lot of things happened to me this week which are my first blogger meetup, my successful thesis defense and my broken heart. The last one is very devastating but I will not let that be a reason for me not to do my homework for this week’s issue. So without further ado, here are my interesting picks for the week. … *sobs* .. sniff.. wipes nose* ..

  • 5 deadly sins to guaranteed to kill your link requests - this is some good advice and a warning to those who want people to link back to them. Do not do these five deadly sins or you can say goodbye to that potential link back to your site.
  • Blog hopping or link baiting - This is also a post that talks about link baiting to gain visitors. It is similar to the first link. Remember that if you do not give effort in the sites you visit (you just say blog hop with a link to your blog without reading anything) others will do the same to you too. ^_^
  • Email Etiquette - This is some nice guidelines on writing emails. I can say that some of them are even applicable outside of emails ! A very good read.
  • Muddy Blogosphere - A rant and a podcast to the recent activities in the mailing list of PinoyBlogosphere. As a member of the mailing, I have to weed out a lot of useless posts just to find nice links to read.
  • Getting sharp images with a digital camera - Pardon me for a sudden change in topic but this is a nice article on improving your camera skills.
  • The DigitalFilipino Blogger Meetup - This has to be included. ^_^ It has been a great event and it was my first blogger meet up.

This week’s issue seemed to be concerned on the recent link baiting people have been doing. They tend to post their links everywhere, yahoo groups, comments and tag boards in order to solicit visits to their blog. Although no one can stop them from doing it, I believe that it does not do them any good. They might gain some visits but they will not gain regular readers for their spam-like actions. Have a nice Sunday everyone!

A mix of good news and bad news

Hello everyone, I’m back from my blog hiatus since I have finished my initial thesis proposal defense yesterday. It was a hard fought battle while I was having a lot of problems. Although I was proud of myself, I persevered through it but it was without suffering a huge loss.

The good news is… I passed my thesis proposal defense.

I can really say that it was a close call. I was literally being chewed by the panelists regarding my proposal. Although I was having a hard time answering their questions, I did not feel bad about it and cursed them while I’m answering (wahaha). In fact, I’m thankful for the questions that have been raised because without those questions, the holes that we have overlooked in the proposal would still be there.

I realized that the terms you use in your proposal mean a lot. If you mistake one term for the other, you could end up with a wrong proposal. I wrote the wrong term in my proposal, instead of “essay features”, i wrote “essay writing skills”. Wow! That is so different and it really affects the whole proposal.

Although I passed, I still have a lot of revisions to do. It just shows how poor my researching skills are. I hope I can finish it in time and get it approved.

Now for the bad newsRead the rest of this entry »

Back up your blog often

Whether you are on free hosting or on paid hosting, you should always back up your blog often. Accidents can happen; you might wake up one day and find your blog gone.

Why should I back up my blog?

  • You might be hacked!
Getting hacked is when someone gets to access your site without your permission or illegally. Once inside your site, that person can do nasty things on your site. He can change your “manly” template into something gay. Or perhaps add new posts about your secrets that you don’t want the world to know. Or add links to sites you have not even heard of. Or just simply to delete your posts, and worse, your blog itself.
  • You might be doing some template changes and messed up your blog’s appearance!
Although it is not recommended to edit your blog’s appearance online, some people do them (I do it when I’m lazy to edit it offline). What if you made some errors while you may be editing? Remember that there’s no undo when editing it live. The moment you clicked that button named “save”, any changes you have done are reflected on your blog.
  • You might delete your blog, by accident!
This happened to Karlo @ PinoyBlogero. He accidentally deleted his own blog. But thanks to his back-ups, it was back only after a few minutes and all it cost him was the panic and feeling of having deleted your own blog. Read the rest of this entry »

My First Blogger Eyeball

Table of contents for My First Blogger Eyeball
  1. Attending my first bloggers eyeball
  2. My First Blogger Eyeball

I promised myself that I will not write this until I finish my powerpoint presentation for thesis. It’s 12:48am now and I am writing this. Can I just get some sleep now and blog this later when I wake up? NO! Haha I want to post this or else I will be forgetting what happened in the event.

So without further ado, let me retell what happened at the event…

The first blogger that I met was Karlo @ PinoyBlogero since we planned to go together since we are not 100% sure of the location of the venue. When we arrived at Glorietta, I asked the security guard and he told us to exit from Glorietta 1 and to our surprise, Max restaurant (venue) was very near to the exit. It was still early, I think just about 4:45. Karlo wants to be the early bird! haha

Moments later, we saw some people entering the place so we followed them. The secret code we uttered was “digital” and we were escorted by the waiter to the second floor to a function room. We were greeted by the organizer of the event, Ms. Janette Toral and was seated together with fellow bloggers. They are Ms. Noemi, Ms. PJ, and Ms. Joy. They were exchanging business cards and poor me since I don’t have any. Lesson Learned! Read the rest of this entry »
