AVG antivirus falsely detects Ragnarok files as a Trojan Virus
Due to the comment that the files I uploaded contains the BackDoor.Ragnarok Trojan Virus, I did a little research about it. Here are the things that I’ve found. (Comment 1 and Comment 2)
AVG has detected something others can’t
The only antivirus that is detecting this BackDoor.Ragnarok virus is Grisoft’s AVG. Now before you all say that AVG is superior against other antivirus programs, think about this first.
- No other antivirus has detected this as a virus. Either it’s a false alarm or it may have discovered something others have not.
- I uploaded the file into Mediafire. Mediafire scans the files for viruses before they allow you to download. Would you think a company such as that will have pathetic antiviruses?
LevelUp Games has made their announcement
Now here’s more, it seems that LevelUpGames is well aware of this and here is what they have to say…
AVG anti-virus issues and conflicts
Date Posted: Mar. 06, 2008To all Ragnarok Players,
We would like to inform you that we are aware of the AVG anti-virus issues or conflicts with regards to the Ragnarok.exe files. We advise everyone not be alarmed, as the virus alert is merely just a false alarm.
We are already working with the developers of AVG to remedy this but as a temporary solution, we advise everyone to try the following measures:
- You can turn off your AVG anti-virus (reminder: you will be open to any virus ones this is done) before patching Ragnarok.
- You can turn off your AVG anti-virus and replace it with another anti virus for now.
- If all Ragnarok.exe files are already in you virus vault, please uninstall your client then turn-off your AVG anti-virus.
- Reinstall Ragnarok client without AVG anti-virus.
Please check back for updates and further announcements.
Thank you very much.
Do not turn off your antivirus!
I was wondering why would LU give out this tip. Turn off your antivirus while Ragnarok is updating. As long as you are on the internet, you should not turn off your antivirus. It’s like going out during winter nude!
For now, I suggest that you just ignore that warning from AVG. Do not turn it off or put it into the vault. Let us wait for further announcements from AVG and Level Up.
For now, I say that BackDoor.Ragnarok virus is just a false alarm.

Great job Allen! A quick response to address the problem. I was wondering what this virus was all about, since my PC did not detect it before. Btw, I’m using Grisoft’s AVG. ^_^
Better safe than sorry…=]
