Have you encountered a FATAL ERROR in your blog when you tried to add a new function to your blog?

I did encounter this earlier when I was upgrading to wordpress 2.3. The reason for the fatal error is that I am calling a function that does not exist (perhaps the plugin that has that function has not been activated for example, similar_posts() won’t work unless the Similar Posts plugin is activated).

Solution:

There is a very simple solution to this problem so that you can avoid these kind of errors. You just have to make use of the function_exists function in PHP…

Table of contents for Learning Robots.txt
  1. Add a robots.txt file to your blog
  2. Using Robots.txt to tell search engines what you want them to index

Lately, I’ve been checking my blog at Google a lot. To check my blog, I use this search query.

site:silkenhut.com/blog

I use this to check if All in One SEO Plug-in has taken effect and also to see which pages are indexed. When I saw my results, I noticed several pages that I don’t want to be indexed but are indexed by Google. Aside from my individual post pages, these are the other things that Google has indexed from the blog.

  • My stats page was indexed and included with it are the links for every person who have commented. (http://silkenhut/stats/?stats_author=Elizar)
  • My feeds and comments are being indexed. (http://silkenhut/2007/08/08/back-up-wordpress-using-a-plug-in/feed/)
  • My archives and pages (http://silkenhut/page/3/) are also being indexed.

This is not a major problem but personally, I want to make sure that the pages being indexed are the useful ones such as the blog articles and not the feeds, comments, archives etc…

Whenever I write some guides or “how to’s” especially on Blog Tech Tips and on Wordpress stuffs, I always include screen shots because I believe that a picture is worth a thousand words. I can understand something better if I see some visuals and I guess it would also apply to other people.

Anyways, yesterday, my friend Kirby from Kirbitz asked me:

What tool did you use when you had the screenshot of the pages for your last post? Please advise on this one. Ive been looking for good methods for this one but im still using the CTRL+Prinst screen and then edit at Paint.

When I read this question, I smiled. Little does he know, I’m also using the Print-screen + paint combo! Hahaha. So here goes my guide on how I use this combo. ^_^ Read the rest of this entry »

I had written some guides on how to back up your blog. Most of them require you to do some work however if you feel very lazy, you can let a website do it for you. This is what I will be writing about now in this post.

Requirements:

  • A blog

I just discovered BlogBackupOnline recently and I liked its simplicity. You just need to enter your blog address and it will do the back ups for you. Another good thing about it is that it can do full backups or daily backups. You can also use it to restore your blogs in case of accidents that may happen on your blog.
In this guide, I will be using my own blog as an example. If you want to read their documentation, you can read it here.

At the time I wrote the “Back up wordpress using a plug-in” guide, I thought restoring the back up was just as easy as doing an import (Dashboard->Manage->Import->Wordpress) in wordpress. I was wrong. I did the import thing yesterday and I got nothing.

So I studied the back up file that was being sent to my email everyday. It has a file extension of sql which is different from the import file required by wordpress. Wordpress needs a file extention of xml. So in a nutshell, file.sql is different from file.xml so it won’t work. However, I found a way to make it work and let me restore the back ups.

Should I share it with you? (*thinks about it–maybe not! mwahahaha* … *slaps self*)

So basically, I’m going to write a guide about this. I would be happy if you have some knowledge on SQL (Structured query language). If you are going to ask me what’s SQL, my answer would be, database. (as you can see, I can’t even define it..^_^)

Requirements:

  • SQL file from the wordpress database back up
  • Access to your blog database (I’ll be using phpMyAdmin for this guide)
  • wordpress wp-config file

Today, I’m going to be discussing on how to back up your wordpress blog with the use of a plug-in.

Requirements:

This guide will do a back up of your wordpress database for you. This is similar to doing a database back up in cpanel but I think this is better. You would ask, why is it better? Well, hopefully after reading this guide you will know if why this is better. This is just an alternative. If you like to do a backup using cpanel, then you can do that too. =)

Now for the guide, this will be divided into two sections.

  1. Manual wordpress database back ups
  2. Automatic wordpress database back ups

This is now my third guide! Oh right! This is the fifth post on the “back up series”. This guide will be about making a back up of your blogger blog.

Please do note that these guide will help you back up your Template/Layout and blog content (posts/labels) SEPARATELY.

Requirements:

  • Classic Blogger Blog
  • Beta Blogger Blog
  • Wordpress.com Account

How to know if you are using Classic or Beta Blogger?

Go to your blogger dashboard and look for the words “Template” or “Layout“.

Classic Blogger has TemplateClassic Blogger
Beta Blogger has Layout Beta Blogger.

I will first teach you how to back up your template/layout then after that, I will teach you how to back up your blog content.

Now for the second guide to doing a back up to your blog, I am going to be tackling wordpress. This guide will be about making a back up of your blog using the wordpress admin panel.

Take note that this will only back up your posts/categories/comments/pages in wordpress. This will not back up your themes/widgets etc. ^_^

Requirements:

  • Wordpress Blog

For this guide, I’m going to let the pictures be the guide. If people will complain, then I will add write ups to the pictures. But I think the pictures are enough. They do say, pictures are worth a thousand words. hehe Well on to the guide. Read the rest of this entry »

I will now start with the technical details of doing some backups for your blog. This guide will be about generating a back up through the use of CPANEL.

This guide is useful only if you are on a paid hosting. If you are on blogger or on free wordpress then you should check out my blogger guide and my wordpress guide.

Requirements:

When you do a back up of your blog, cpanel creates a compressed file for you to download. You need winrar to open them if you want to see the contents. The compressed file has an extention of gz. So how do we back up? Read the rest of this entry »

Since I am very thankful to the people who visit, comment and just read my blog, I would like to give some love. Aside from saying, I love you all (oh yeah!), you get a reward! The reward is this, the top commentators plug-in.

These are the settings that I have set in the options.

  • The top commentators will be featured for 15 days before it resets.
  • Up to ten (10) commentators will be displayed
  • If there is a link provided, then your name will also have a link.

Although since my blog is fairly new, I don’t know if it can benefit the blogs of the top commentators. Oh well, now if only I can make it work… -_-

Edit: Yeah I made it work… Based on what I have done, it does not work if I just used a text widget for it so I edited the template manually.

Continue for a tip on how to maximize your link using this plug-in
