I remembered a tip by Jaypee where he told me that it would be better if the blog is located on the root domain instead of a subdomain such as “domain/blog”.

So I researched and tested my findings on a local install of wordpress first. After making it work, I tried it on my live blog. I did not get it at the first try but as of now, I think it already works. Before I start with the guide, let me answer some questions first the might be asked.

What exactly is this for?

This guide is for migrating your wordpress blog to another location. In this specific scenario, I changed the location of my blog from http://silkenhut to http://silkenhut.com.

What are the risks for this move?

  • Tons of broken links (Internal - within your blog and External - those who link to you)
    • Fixing Internal Links - This can be solved by executing a sql command.
    • Fixing External Links - This can be solved through .htaccess.
  • Broken links to images
    • Not yet solved
  • Drop in Google pagerank
    • Since I don’t have control over the pagerank, I can’t do anything about this. ^_^
  • Broken links from search engine results (until the search engines reindex your blog)
    • This can be solved through .htaccess
  • Probable loss of traffic
    • This can be solved through .htaccess

Although I mentioned these risks, I’m currently looking for solutions on how to minimize or find a work around for these links. As of now, I’m currently checking the blog for more errors. If you find any error, please inform me right away.

Let me update you on what’s been happening to the blog in its renovation. As you can see, I just can’t stop myself from posting even though I’m currently renovating it.

Here are the changes since the last renovation posts:

  1. Removed the parent-child categories
  2. Previously, the blog had parent and child categories for posts. What does that mean? For example, I have a parent category named “Blogging” and it’s child categories are “Blogging tips” & “Blogger Events“. When I write a post about blogging, it’s either placed in “Blogging tips” or in “Blogger Events” but not in the category “blogging”.

So I thought, what’s the use for the parent category, “Blogging”? Since the child categories are enough to categorize my posts, I decided to delete the parent categories. So if you would look at my sidebar, you would see that the categories that used to be an hierarchy are now all in the same level.

  3. Theme nearly finished
  4. I have already chosen a theme and I’m currently customizing it as I speak. I got the theme from themes.wordpress.net so if you need some themes, that’s the place to go. Right now, I’m still thinking on what to put on the sidebars of the theme. I expect the theme change to happen within the week or early next week. I’m kind off excited, what about you? hehe :)

One of the problems in changing your wordpress permalinks is the risk of broken links. Broken links would really hurt your blog since it will be considered as poorly maintained and you will lose the search engine rankings of those links. So in order to avoid broken links, you can do the following:

  1. Manually change each link in your blog to your new link
  2. This is a very time consuming task and I do not recommend that you do this. This method also cannot solve all your problems since you can only solve your internal links. But what about the links from other blogs? You will have to find all the blogs that are linking to you and you will have to ask them to change their links to your blog!!! That would be a big pain in the — . hehe So what should we do? Let’s move on to item number two (it rhymes!) Read the rest of this entry »

Table of contents for November 2007 Blog Renovations
  1. Silkenhut’s Blog to undergo major renovations
  2. Changing permalinks and avoiding dead links
  3. One level categories, theme nearly finished
  4. Transferring from domain/blog to root domain
  5. New blog theme

I would like to announce that Silkenhut’s World will be undergoing renovations for this week and perhaps maybe up to next week. Perhaps you might be wondering why it would take me atleast a week for the renovation. To answer that, let me share with you my plans for the renovation of the blog.

  • A new theme - Yup3x! I am going to be changing my blog theme. This has been decided after Selaplana’s review of my blog. At first, I was already thinking of changing my theme but I was just too lazy. However, after his review, I decided to change it. I hope that you will like the new theme.
  • Permalink change - Permalinks are the urls of the posts. As of now, the url has the pattern of /year/month/day/post-title. I would like to change it to simply, /post-title/. This is a delicate task since if I do this wrong, I’m going to lose 4months worth of links and I’ll be left with broken links all over the blog.
  • More Tweaking - I will be tweaking the blog to make it more presentable for everyone. I’ll add wordpress plugins that will make user experience very nice. ^_^

So there you are, my future plans. I hope you won’t leave me while I try to make this blog better.
