Globe Telecoms “Ghost” Data Charges – Probable Root Cause

Globe Telecoms “Ghost” Data Charges – Probable Root Cause

Globe Bill Data Charges in Minutes

This would be the last of my series of posts regarding the browsing charges I’m getting from Globe Telecoms even if I’m not using mobile data (unless there’s a change in the scenarios). To review, here’s the link of the other posts.

  1. Globe Telecoms Ghost Data Charges
  2. Globe Mobile Internet Disabled
  3. Globe provides the data extract
  4. Trying to Isolate Globe Ghost Data Charges

After doing several rounds of observations, tests and reversal of charges, I can now pinpoint the scenario that causes me to get charged with mobile data charges even if I didn’t activate mobile data. So what are they?

  1. You must have a LTE-sim under Globe Telecoms
  2. You must not be subscribed to any data plan ; but should be under TIME-Based Browsing.
  3. Your phone’s network mode should be set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE (Auto)
  4. Your phone must be running on Kitkat 4.4.2*
  5. You have turned off mobile data on your phone

*Note: the 4th scenario is something I couldn’t confirm still but the timings does coincide with the LG G2 Philippines – Kitkat Upgrade

You might ask if this happens to Smart or Sun subscribers. I wouldn’t know because I don’t have neither simcards from both networks. But if you can confirm that the same thing happens regardless of network, then that would be great info!

As of now, there’s nothing that Globe can do except to reverse the charges and I need to apply a workaround in my case to avoid these charges.

The workaround is to change your network mode to GSM/WCDMA. The drawback is that I’ll be losing the LTE capabilities of my phone when I’ll use mobile data but it’s better than the monthly headaches I’m getting from seeing these data charges.

So what’s next?

For me, I’m looking forward to the possible Android Lollipop upgrade for the LG G2; hopefully by next year.

To those who are in the same boat as me where you are getting data charges on your bill (which you didn’t use); feel free to request from Globe the data extract. They have done the same thing for me (even sending on a daily basis) so go ahead and exert your right for these extracts to prove that you didn’t use them.

Hope this helps,

Till next time,

Allen
