Linksys E1200 Router
Update: RIP December 2014
I just got myself a new router from Cisco / Linksys: Linksys E1200. This would be my 3rd router after Buffalo WCR-GN and Linksys WRT54GH. While checking out routers, my options were Linksys E1200, D-Link 605L and TP Link MR3220 (can use 3g).
Similarly to any new router setup, it asks you to use the CD provided to do the initial setup. I was surprised because it did everything for me such as setting up security and wireless details that by the end of the initial setup, my devices were all connected already to the router with no problems. It also added a guest wireless setting (similar to what you see in coffee shops where you have to open your browser and log in to use the internet).
As long as I can already use the internet and share wifi to my gadgets, I am already satisfied.
Unfortunately, I have to share some problems I experienced with the Linksys E1200 router. Although I do have a not-so-reliable internet connection especially at night, I noticed that my wifi connection gets dropped more often than my previous two routers.
I can’t barely browse the net where one time it would be fast, then another time it would give me timeouts. I did some research about it and there were several threads complaining about the same problem.
Here were the temporary solutions that were suggested.
- Disable WMM Support
- Change Wifi security to WPA Personal2
- Disable UPNP
- Change the wireless channel to 1, 6 or 11 (or try to see which wifi channels are not utilized by other wifi signals in your area)
- Change MTU size to
- Read this guide from Cisco that can help.
I’ll try to apply these settings if they would work. If the router continues to give me problems, I’ll try flashing it to DD-WRT and if it still doesn’t improve, I’ll get another router.
All is good now. The most important setting to apply is to disabled WMM Support. Aside from that, it was my internet connection that was acting up.
Till next time,
