Maximizing my Gym Membership

Maximizing my Gym Membership

Now this is something that I should have done years ago but only started doing now. I’ve been a member of our company’s free Gym program for a few years now and I have to admit that I wasn’t using it to its full potential. I still look the same as I was years ago (except for maybe a bigger tummy) so there’s no progress. Personally, my goal was to be stronger, bigger and have those nice physiques.

What I used to do was to read on magazines and on the internet for routines that I can do on the gym. Usually these are routines that have several exercises to be done in a specific (or can be non specific) order. It would be good for a few weeks (or days even) and I would get tired of it. I would then jump to the next routine… and the cycle continues. But why am I not progressing?

Let us jump to now where I believe I have made progress in just a few months (vs no progress for a few years). Here’s what I learned:

take it slow
It’ll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience (Guns and Roses)

  1. Patience – I’m impatient. I initially thought that a few curls here and there would give me bigger arms; a set of bench press would give me a bigger chest… but lately I have to keep reminding myself that it doesn’t work that way. I need to keep doing it even if I don’t see immediate results because in the long run, I would benefit… but that would only be possible if… (# 2)
  2. Consistency – Initially, I would go to gym for about a month or so then will be on hiatus for the next few months. I would then get inspired again, go to the gym for another month or two; then go back to the hiatus. In short, I wasn’t consistent. Well, being consistent is one the key factors if you want to see results. I force myself to make time to go the gym, adjust my schedule and sometimes just force myself even if I’m not really feeling it.Milo Lifting Cow - Progressive Loading (no gym yet)
  3. Beating the last session’s you – Now this I hear a lot; from friends, magazines or online. In order to get better or strong, you need to lift more. You have to consistently try to do more than what you have done before (e.g adding more weight). Slowly but surely, you will progress!

Now, with these three things in mind, I went from barely making 2-3 gym visits a month to going to the gym 3x a week.

So what to do in the gym? We would need a routine and I have to tell you now that not all routines are equal. Some might work; while some may not. I’m going to share with you what worked for me in my succeeding posts so stay tuned.

Till next time,

Allen
