Last August 2007, I received a mybloglog message from Ms. Janette Toral regarding her new project called the Filipina Writing Project. I know I’m pretty late in blogging about this and I don’t think this can count as an official entry since I’m just going to give my two cents about this project.
What is the Filipina Writing Project about?
To have an idea of the goal of this project, I suggest you do a Google Search for the word Filipina. The results you will most likely see are results that link to pr0n sites. If you are someone who does not know what a Filipina is, what would you deduce from the results? You would think that Filipinas are prostitutes, pr0n models and instant-wives-for-sale. If you are a Filipino, how would you feel if this is the image of your countrywomen? Can you say that, my wife is a Filipina but for non Filipinos, she’s a prostitute or a whore?
Basically, this project aims to change the search engine results for the keyword “Filipina“. As a Filipina herself, Ms. Janette Toral wants to remove the bad image Filipinas have on the internet. It is to create awareness that Filipinas are NOT prostitutes, NOT pr0n models and definitely NOT instant-wives-for-sale. So in order to do this, bloggers must unite , especially Filipino bloggers, to try and change the Filipina image through blogging.
What can you do to join or help the Filipina Writing Project?
First thing that you need in order to join or help in the writing project is to have a blog. Then just write a post that is themed around Filipina. NO! You shall not spam the word Filipina in your post but instead, just write something about it. You can write about what is a Filipina, how do you court Filipinas, what are they like and what are their characteristics. You can even make a story where the characters are Filipinas.
After you write your post, you can leave a comment at this post,
Pretty easy right?
Will this Filipina Writing Project succeed?
The answer to this question will be based on my opinion only ok?
Personally, this Filipina Writing Project will have a hard time succeeding. It is not because of lack of support since I have seen a lot of bloggers blog about it, but it is because of the influence of the other sites. When I say other sites, I mean those sites that tarnish the image of Filipinas. The other sites have more authority since more people visit them and search engines love frequently visited sites. Let’s face it, sexxx sells and sells a lot. People would rather look at pr0n pictures of Filipinas rather than see how Filipinas are hospitable or how they can take care of their kids.
I am not saying that this Filipina Writing Project will fail since it has not finished yet. I am still glad and happy for the effort to erase the dirty image that has been placed on Filipinas. I am in support of this project and I hope that in the near future, searching for Filipina in Google would return more decent results.
(Naughty words mispelled to avoid google from thinking that my blog is a pr0n blog. hehe)
