Table of contents for How silkenhut.com started
  1. Planning on getting a new domain
  2. Installing wordpress locally
  3. Silkenhut.com goes live

I bought my hosting from philhosting . I was amazed by their fast service because I paid for the package at about 1:20pm and the account was activated after three hours. I was very excited for this was my first web hosting account and my first domain.

I quickly logged into my account using the secured cpanel. Although secured cpanel is a bit slower than the normal log-in, the added security is worth it. After logging in, I saw the interface of cpanel and I was at a lost of what I should do. So many buttons to click and learn. Good thing there was a cpanel documentation which I was able to read and learn about the features of cpanel. If you are new to cpanel (just like me), I would suggest to try everything out. I mean, click all the buttons and learn what that specific button does. It can be helpful in the future.

Now, the next thing to do was to upload my local wordpress blog to my account so that it can go live. I thought that it was just an easy task. However, it took me a few hours before I was able to make this blog online. I was making a lot of mistakes due to not being sure of what I was doing. In total, I made five attempts which I’m going to share and describe. My attempts:

  1. Upload the local wordpress site using cute ftp client
This was my first attempt and my first failure. I don’t know what went wrong but I was not able to upload anything to the site using cute ftp. I even changed the permissions on the folders using chmod but it was still a failure.
  2. Install wordpress from the cpanel
While browsing cpanel, I came across a feature of cpanel. Automatic install of wordpress! All I have to do was to fill up some forms and voila, wordpress is installed. This was a good idea but I was thinking that I will just overwrite it when using my local wordpress files so it would just be a waste of time.
  3. Install wordpress using fantastico
Another feature for cpanel is fantastico. Basically my reason is similar to #2. Although at this point, I was getting frustrated because I still can’t make my blog work so I was leaning to use this.
  4. Upload using file manager
Oh well, since I decided not to use the automatic wordpress installations being offered by cpanel, I have to resort to uploading again. I found the file manager and thought about uploading the site piece by piece. Then I checked the number of files wordpress has. It’s going to take me all night to do this! No way!
  5. Uploading using filezilla
Finally, the answer to my prayers. I downloaded filezilla and tried again to upload via FTP. Success!!! Although the upload process was very slow since I had to upload about 9mb, at least I am getting somewhere. After uploading the site, I also imported the database entries to the site. I checked the results and I was happy.

http://silkenhut is now online!

As you can see, being a newbie to this web hosting thing I had a hard time just putting up my site online. But I always think that every mistake is something new to learn and as long as the end result is achieved, I am satisfied.

So this ends my three series posts on how silkenhut.com got online.
