Tomorrow, it will be February 25, the 22th anniversary of the People Power Revolution or the EDSA revolution that happened on February 25, 1986.
EDSA I (Edsa 1) - Marcos Out, Cory In
The first EDSA Revolution happened on February 25, 1986 where Ferdinand Marcos was the president of the Philippines. After Ninoy Aquino was assasinated on his return to the Philippines, people gathered on the EDSA Shrine asking Marcos to step down. This event became famous all over the world because it was a bloodless revolution. The people who went to EDSA were composed of students, priests, nuns, and all other kinds of civilians. The military can’t do anything but stand still because they are up against unarmed civilians. The revolution ended when Marcos fled to Hawaii and Cory Aquino became the president of the Philippines.
EDSA II (Edsa 2) - Erap Out, Gloria In
It all started when Chavit Singson revealed to the people of the Philippines the massive amount of money Erap gets from jueting. After that, everyone who wanted some attention called for Erap to resign. Another factor that drove the people to go to EDSA is the results of senate’s voting on the “envelope”. The envelope was said to contain the evidences of Eraps corruption. However, the pro Erap senators defeated the anti erap senators to a vote of 11-10. Then it started, people started to gather in EDSA. This revolution lasted for four days and ERAP was forced to step down. As the vice president of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo assumed her new role as the president of the Philippines.
EDSA III (Edsa 3?) - Gloria maintains her throne
I’m not sure if this can be considered an EDSA revolution. This happened just four months after EDSA 2 and was made of the uber loyal supporters of ERAP. These new crowd were more violent than the crowds of the previous revolutions and they failed miserably in their attempt to overthrow Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Other EDSA events
What I don’t like everytime February 25 comes is people go to EDSA to protest. They are ruining the real spirit of the first EDSA revolution. As of now, EDSA is just a place where they can protest like hell.
So my question for now, will there be another EDSA revolution this 2008? Now that Lozada has become the second Chavit Singson, will GMA follow Eraps footsteps? What will the world think of the celebration of EDSA revolution now?

1People will not protest if there is no reason to do so. EDSA 1 & 2 proved that power belongs to the people, not to dictators, plunderers and lying cheaters.

3@Ederic - Opps I forgot about the Hello Garci scandal.. my only source for this write-up is wikipedia and I did not see it. hehe
However, EDSA 1 and 2 was a success but the other EDSAs were not. It seems that some people think that if they rally or protest on EDSA itself, we will get a new president.

4Although the revolution is an extra-constitutional action to demand change in the government, i think that it was effective 22 years ago. A democracy is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. I don’t think that another EDSA will cause the same results. Everyone should take initiative on what to do. I see a contradiction today. Btw, we almost have the same post. Maybe you’d like to check out my blog (or exchange links).

5People power — or the direct action of the people — is invoked when democratic institutions fail, as we’ve seen in Estrada impeachment trial.
Those who are calling for people power now see signs of such breakdown because of Hello Garci, the failed impeachment attempts, and repressive policies of the current administration.
They say the people’s vote was subverted in 2004 when Garcillano acted as Gloria’s operative and helped her “lead by more than one million” votes. They also argue that the impeachment process against Arroyo failed because the congressmen — many of whom allegedly received bribes from the Palace — blocked a possible impeachment trial to hide the truth.
Also, Arroyo’s repressive policies such as EO 464 are viewed as further attempts to strengthen the power of the President and prevent check and balances in the government.
And of course, the current calls for people power is fueled by the culture of corruption and impunity in the Arroyo administration.
As for the so-called EDSA 3, it just wanted to put back a plunderer back to the Palace.
