Wordpress 2.6.3 - Snoopy Patch

Upgrade to wordpress 2.6.3

I was glancing at my wordpress dashboard and noticed that it was prompting me to upgrade to Wordpress 2.6.3. So I will follow what wordpress tells me as it might be a good update.

After reading the Wordpress Development Blog, I learned that this little update is to make a little fix to a vulnerability found on Snoopy (not the dog). Snoopy is the one who fetches the feeds that you can see in your dashboard. As I usually read those feeds a lot when browsing for wordpress news, I believe it is a required or mandatory update.

Files to replace in wordpress 2.3.3

/wp-includes/class-snoopy.php
/wp-includes/version.php

This update won’t even take 5 minutes of your time so just do it. :)

You should promote the auto update tool from the wordpress plugin site. It doesn’t actually update on a schedule but when you login and it says theres an update, you click update and it goes through all the steps. All you have to do is click.

By mandatory update, do you mean that we have to update? I haven’t updated Wordpress since I started my blog a year ago…

@Ling: That is actually really bad. I like wordpress, but one of its flaws is that there is a lot of sloppy coding. Pretty much every update, fixes a security hole that could leave your site completely un-protected.

This last one mostly dealt with rss stuff, but the last one closed a whole that allowed people to reset the admin password. It is imperative that you stay on top of the updates for wordpress.

@New York Lingerie - Ah yes, I have made a post about that and I use that everytime I upgrade. However, since it only concerns two files, I don’t think it would take that much time. Thanks for the heads-up.

@Ling - I do agree with Porch Lifts. You should update/upgrade your wordpress installation else you risk your blog getting hacked. :)
