How to remove XP Total Security 2011 Virus?

I just got infected by “Total Security 2011″ Malware/Virus and I wasted a lot of time trying to remove it. The name will change depending on your OS but don’t be confused, they are one and the same.

• Windows 7 – Win 7 Internet Security 2011
• Windows XP – XP Total Security 2011
• WIndows Vista – Vista Total Security 2011

This will be a quick post on how to remove this bad virus. I have no idea where I got this one and McAfee failed me (well, I can’t remove it from this laptop).

Possible Solutions:

• System Restore

I just ran system restore and so far so good. The virus is nowhere to be found.

• Scan with MalwareBytes

Sometimes this will not work because the virus is able to block opening programs (it blocks out all browsers).

• Manual removal - (mine was kkg.exe) -Source (http://www.virusremovalguru.com/?p=6844)

Stop XP Total Security 2011 Processes (run task manager)
[random letters].exe
Remove XP Total Security 2011 Files
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\[random letters].exe
Remove XP Total Security 2011 Registry Keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\XP Total Security 2011
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\XP Total Security 2011
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\XP Total Security 2011
Remove XP Total Security 2011 Startup Entry (run msconfig.exe)
[random letters].exe
